American Center Kigali

The American Center Kigali is located inside the U.S. Embassy.  It is the reference center for information about the United States.  The current collection exceeds 4000 books in English and French language. Most of the collection is available for circulation. The American Center has in-depth collections in the following areas:

Public Health

The Public Health collection supports graduate level research into the field of Public Health with an emphasis on clinical medicine and nursing.

Business

The Business collection is directed at citizens interested in developing projects into a small to medium size enterprise.

eLibraryUSA

Additionally, the American Center has access to eLibraryUSA (PDF 165KB), a collection of databases that support life-long learning.

The American Center is open to the public, with identification, Monday to Thursday from 9:00 – 16:00, except on American and Rwandan holidays.

The American Center Kigali, using both electronic and print materials provides information about the United States, its people, and its policies to promote mutual understanding, culture and information exchange between the United States and Rwanda.

We offer a range of resources, programs and services to provide accurate and up-to-date information on contemporary American politics and society, international relations, U.S. economy and on global issues such as human rights, communications, environment, media, women issues etc.

We serve people from all walks of life that include University Students and Teachers, Researchers, Government Officials, media representatives, and business owners. We serve enrolled members and walk-in patrons, answer telephone queries, reply to mail and e-mail inquiries. Our library is open to the public for reference, research and borrowing facilities. In addition to books we provide a showcase for state-of-the-art American information technology.

The American Center (Library) has an English Lab with 5 computers to help the audience learn English using English CDs, DVDs, and related books.

Internet Corner

In order to provide information about the U.S. beyond the confines of its own collection, the American Center has installed computers terminals with full Internet access. The Internet Corner is designed to provide free internet-based computer reference facilities to all registered library patrons. At times the Internet Corner is reserved for teaching and training.

Internet service is available to patrons during the American Center working hours.

Membership

Membership (at no cost) is open to professional at Universities (public & private), business, Government, media and the law, non-governmental organizations, as well as students registered at tertiary institutions.

The American Center Kigali has a new library catalog.  It is called an Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) used by many library systems around the world. Patrons can access it easily.

Find the Library Catalog and our 5 most recent titles. If you are looking for a specific book, say: “A Lesson Before Dying” by Ernest Gaines. A patron can search by the title, author, or keywords to locate it.  Give it a try and let us know what you think.

Library members may check out two books at a time for two weeks.  Each patron has an individual account and will receive notices via email.
