Health Alert – U.S. Embassy Kigali, Rwanda (April 16, 2020)

Event:  Last Chance for Tickets on Rwandair flight on Saturday, April 18

Tickets are still available for the Rwandair flight on Saturday, April 18.  The deadline for purchasing tickets is today at noon.  The U.S. Embassy encourages Americans citizens and legal permanent residents who interested in departing for the U.S. to book tickets on this flight.  Currently, the U.S. Embassy does not know of any additional commercial flights leaving Rwanda. Furthermore, the Embassy does not know when the Kigali International Airport will resume normal operations or when regular commercial flights will resume to Kigali.

Any onward travel will need to be scheduled separately.  Passengers transiting Addis Ababa should have a ticket for an onward flight on the same day or they risk being quarantined at their own expense. For more information transiting Addis Ababa, please review the information on the U.S. Embassy in Ethiopia’s website.

On April 15, the Rwandan Ministry of Health confirmed 136 cases of COVID-19 in Rwanda.

The government of Rwanda announced that it is enacting COVID-19 prevention measures through April 19. Non-essential movements and travel between cities are prohibited, and non-essential businesses are closed. Rwandan citizens and residents returning to the country are subject to a mandatory 14-day quarantine at designated locations.  Visit the local government COVID-19 website for updated information.

Effective March 16, the U.S. Embassy Kigali has suspended routine consular services.  For emergency American Citizens Services, including emergency passports, Consular Reports of Birth Abroad, and passport renewals, please email for an appointment.

The Department of State has issued a Global Level 4 Health Advisory for COVID-19.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Level 3 Global COVID-19 Outbreak Notice.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Level 3 Warning for COVID-19 in Europe advising travelers to avoid non-essential travel to Europe.
