Event:  84 Confirmed COVID-19 Cases in Rwanda

On April 2, the Rwandan Ministry of Health confirmed 84 cases of COVID-19 in Rwanda.

The Embassy expects to announce an additional flight departing from Rwanda soon.  If you wish to return to the United States or think you may want to return to the U.S. in the near future, the Embassy strongly urges you to book tickets on the next available commercial flight quickly after it is announced as there will only be a limited number of tickets available.  The Embassy expects that flights out of Kigali continue to be limited and cannot guarantee that additional flights, either commercial or charter, will be available or that the Kigali International Airport will open after the conclusion of the 30 day closure.  If you wish to receive information about travel back to the U.S., please email ConsularKigali@state.gov with the subject line “American Citizen Information.”

On April 1, the government of Rwanda announced that the COVID-19 prevention measures would be continued for another two weeks until 23:59 on April 19. Non-essential movements and travel between cities are prohibited, and non-essential businesses are closed. Rwandan citizens and residents returning to the country are subject to a mandatory 14-day quarantine at designated locations.  Visit the local government COVID-19 website for updated information.

Effective March 16, the U.S. Embassy Kigali has suspended routine consular services.  For emergency American Citizens Services, including emergency passports, Consular Reports of Birth Abroad, and passport renewals, please email ConsularKigali@state.gov for an appointment.

The Department of State has issued a Global Level 4 Health Advisory for COVID-19.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Level 2 Global COVID-19 Outbreak Notice.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Level 3 Warning for COVID-19 in Europe advising travelers to avoid non-essential travel to Europe.
