Security Alert #3 – Volcanic Eruption of Mount Nyiragongo – U.S. Embassy Official in Gisenyi available for assistance
Location: Western Rwanda, specifically Rubavu District in the Western Province
Event: As of early Sunday, May 23, local authorities and media report that the eruption of Mount Nyiragongo has subsided. There were reports of seismic activity during the night which are considered normal and expected. The U.S. Embassy urges all U.S. citizens in and around Goma/Gisenyi to remain vigilant, monitor local media and follow instructions from all local authorities.
A U.S. Embassy official will be in Gisenyi on Sunday, May 23 until 2:30 PM. If you require assistance and would like to meet in person to discuss your response to the eruption, please e-mail ACSKigali@state.gov.
