Security Alert #1 – Volcanic Eruption of Mount Nyiragongo in Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)

Location: Western Rwanda, specifically Rubavu District in the Western Province

Event: Rwandan and Congolese media report that Mount Nyiragongo, a volcano in Eastern DRC near Goma began erupting on Saturday.  The U.S. Embassy urges caution in Eastern DRC and in neighboring Rwandan provinces, especially Rubavu District in the Western Province. Volcanic experts report the lava flow is currently heading northeast away from the cities of Goma and Gisenyi.  The U.S. Embassy urges U.S. citizens to monitor local media for updates and follow local guidance.

Actions to Take:

  • Monitor local media and official government channels.
  • Follow instructions of local authorities.
  • Do not go toward the volcano.
